My thesis in classical philology will explore how the ancient Greeks and Romans explained the world\’s structure through the mythological being Atlas. And how he was described in their literary texts. This literature review chapter will explain one of the three distinguished realms of the Greek (Roman) world – THE UNDERWORLD. (I have attached the chapter for heavens and earth as an example). This chapter should explore the structure and \”geography\” of the underworld. The different parts of it, where it was, who it was inhibited by, etc.
Also the introductory part for these 3 chapters, where maybe shortly the formation of the world and how the three realms came to be can be explained.
Ancient texts (both Greek and Roman) should be used. But it should not be overly mythological, rather take the real and \”scientific\” behind them. Also recent texts that help explain the myths can be used. Please note, that this paper should not contain generic mythology facts known by everyone. Maybe even there is a research paper about this. Please don\’t use websites as a source. Also the focus is less so on the authors and differences in texts. All should work together to paint a more detailed and vaster picture of the underworld\’s structure.
