Answer these questions below based on primary and secondary resources also using the works cited.
1). The very nature of a soliloquy is that it allows the character to express his or thoughts and feelings unencumbered. So, for example, we generally feel that Hamlet is being open, honest, and sincere when he delivers each of his seven soliloquies. There is a question, though, of whether Ophelia is present for Hamlet’s famous “To be or not to be” soliloquy in Act III, Scene 2, lines 56-88. What difference would it make if she was there? Analyze the speech both with and without her.
2). Hamlet Act 1: Characterize the family relationship between Ophelia, Laertes, and Polonius. Use a few brief examples from Act I, Scene 3 to illustrate your comments.

Instructions for Essay 3:
1. An essay should be approximately four double-spaced pages, or approximately 1100 words. Follow the MLA format.
2.Be sure to have a clear thesis at the end of your introduction. You will prove this thesis in the body of the essay.
3. Avoid using the first person “I” and the second person “you.”
4. Be sure to use brief, relevant quotes from the play(s) you are discussing.
5. Include a list of works cited. Your list should include your secondary sources and the play(s) you are discussing.
You need to use 3-5 secondary sources.
Two of these sources must be articles from journals.
The other sources can be (almost) any credible, relevant, useful source. This includes additional journal articles, books, and even web sources.
You may also use the textbook’s Intro to Shakespeare (p. 1332-1228) as one of the other sources.
Secondary sources:
*You may use the articles posted in Module 12. (These will count as journal articles.)
*Act III: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern and the lord chamberlain have failed utterly to discover
the true cause of Hamlet’s distraction. Claudius determines then to send Hamlet to England with
the two spies. The presentation of the murder-play so disturbs the King that he leaves the hall,
but, in spite of Hamlet’s conviction of his uncle’s guilt, he cannot make up his mind to kill him
when he encounters him alone at prayer. Almost immediately afterwards when his mother is
upbraiding him for his conduct, he turns upon her; her cry for help is echoed from behind the
curtain, and , thrusting his rapier at an intruder who he thinks is the King, Hamlet kills the spying
Polonius. The Ghost appears to Hamlet again but not to the Queen, who is convinced, for the
moment, of her son’s insanity; but he tells her henceforth not to take sides against him.

*The following is British actor Ben Crystal’s reading of the famous “To Be or Not to Be” speech from Act III, Scene 1 of Hamlet. The emphasis here is on the correct pronunciation of the words. (Click on the URL to open in a new window, click on the video to play on this page.)

When I grade this essay, I will be looking for:
A strong, clear thesis. This thesis will be at the end of the introduction paragraph.
An introduction paragraph that fluently introduces the central issues of the paper. It should also mention the play title and author. The introduction should end with the thesis.
Good logical paragraphing. Each paragraph should be distinct. Each paragraph will have its own “issue” or topic that helps to support/prove the overall thesis of the essay.
Plenty of specific quotes from and specific references to the play.
Effective use of the secondary sources. These source quotes should help you make your point(s). They should be worked into the body of the essay (and not saved for the end). These alone are worth 10 points of the overall essay grade.
A clean, error-free Works Cited. (The Works Cited is also worth 10 points of the overall essay grade.):
**Here is a list of things that you should do and some things you should NOT do when putting together a Works Cited page.
1. The list of Works Cited goes on its own page—the last page of your essay.
2. MLA Page Number – Since this IS the last page of your essay, you should have your last name and page
number at the top right hand corner, just like all the previous pages. (ex. Jones 5)
3. Center Works Cited at the top of the page. It is Works with an s.
a. Do NOT do anything else to this title Works Cited. Do NOT use bold, or larger font,
do not underline, do not use quotation marks. Nothing.
4. Double space. (Everything in the essay is double spaced, including the Works Cited.)
5. No extra spaces between entries. (Don’t hit enter twice after you finish an entry.)
6. Do NOT number the entries. Do NOT use bullets for the entries. Do NOT separate the entries by type
(Articles, Books, etc.).
7. Put the entries in alphabetical order by author’s last name. (Do NOT use Mr. or Mrs. or Dr. or any other
titles for people—just use the name.)
8. If you do not have an author name, use the title of the work for alphabetizing purposes. (But, you should be
able to find an author in most cases. Do NOT use the word “Anonymous” unless the work you have
specifically says Anonymous for the author.)
9. Titles: Mark titles appropriately (MLA format). For most shorter works, use quotation marks (articles,
poems, short stories, chapters). For most longer works, use Italics (plays, books, journals, magazines,
databases). Do NOT use underlining for any titles.
10. Use Reverse Indentation. This means you start at the left margin for each entry and go all the way to the
right margin for the first line and then come back to the left margin and hit tab ONE time for each line after that.
So, the 2nd+ lines of each entry should be tabbed over ONE time. (By the way, there is no specific information
that goes on line one or line two, etc. You just go until you reach the right margin and then come back to the
left margin and hit tab.)
11. For repeat authors, use three hyphens and a period. —. This means, if you have the same author on your
list, back to back, (Flannery O’Connor, for example), the second time, instead of putting the author name, you
put —. and then the title. The —. replaces the author name the second and subsequent times.
12. Put a period at the end of every entry.
