For this assignment, you are to create a story that shows the impact of climate change on
humans and the environment. Consider how climate change has altered weather patterns, food
production, sea levels, ocean acidification and more. You don’t have to include all of these
aspects; however, your climate fiction piece must demonstrate a good understanding of the
impacts of climate change. Your story can be one that focuses on the negative impacts of
climate change, or it can focus on how characters or a society has combated climate change
and was rewarded with positive results.
Your story must be three-to-five pages in length, and include a reference page (not counted
towards page length). You do not need to use in-text citations or quotations, as this story must
be one that comes solely from your imagination; however, you do need to provide a reference
page. You are to note three or more sources that you used as inspiration to create your story.
These sources must be climate change related. For example, you could use a video from
National Geographic that talks about the cause and effect relationship of climate change. As
with all work, you must use MLA formatting.
Tips for fiction writing:
● Create a setting that is realistic and appropriate for your topic. This means you’ll need to
research possible climate outcomes for your particular setting.
● Setting not only includes where a story takes place, but also considers when a story
takes place.
● Develop your characters so that they feel believable, and be sure they each have their
own distinct mannerisms, thoughts, and desires. You don’t want your characters to feel
like carbon copies of each other. Don’t be overly ambitious and include too many
characters. You are writing a short story, and with that in mind, you’ll want your readers
to be able to keep track of your characters and follow your storyline.
● Demonstrate your knowledge on your topic by doing your research. You will want your
readers to be able to trust your words.
● Use descriptive language judiciously and appropriately. Important moments deserve
attention.
● Although you want to create a realistic story focused on climate change, don’t be afraid
to let your creativity shine through. Fiction writing should be enjoyable. After all, you are
creating your own imagined worlds.
