The term autohistoria comes from the writing of Gloria Anzaldúa and describes the ways one’s personal or collective history helps to deconstruct the past/present through non-dominant interpretations of reality. In this style of writing, personal and creative narratives become a way to analyze and theorize. For this assignment students will reflect on their own experiences and relationship with identity and race.
Writing Prompt: Students will write a 600-900-word personal narrative about their evolving understanding of race and identity. This does not need to be in traditional academic writing form, and students can be as creative or as straight forward as they wish. Three overarching questions must be answered through your personal narrative. They are:
Where does your personal knowledge of race and identity come from?
What life experiences and/or world events have contributed to how you understand race and identity? In answering this question, demonstrate your knowledge of the term racial project.
How have these experiences shaped your understanding of racial justice?
While there is no one way to answer these questions, I suggest that students write from the first-person perspective and use this assignment as chance to reflect on their life experiences/struggles/choices with identity, as well as their evolving knowledge of race and racism, and their personal beliefs about racial justice.
Student are encouraged to be creative with this assignment. However, if you are having trouble getting started, the following questions may be helpful. Where is home for you, and how was race and identity understood in your house? In your community? What identities or labels were salient to your understanding of self as a child? As an adult? Have these identities changed? When and how? As you narrate your journey, I also suggest reflecting on important events. This may mean an experience that was uniquely important to you, or a global movement, such as Black Lives Matter, that may have exposed you to new or different discourse surrounding racial justice.
I would also like to note that while students are asked to reflect on their experiences with race and identity, this does not mean you must focus on your most sensational or traumatic experiences. These narratives can be as personal as you wish. They will not be shared beyond your TA and the instructor.
